On Tuesday December 17th, members of The Rotary Club of Norfolk and their guests, gathered at the MacArthur Memorial in downtown Norfolk, not far from the location of the old Monticello Hotel where just 100 years ago a group of area businessmen gathered to discuss the formation of a new Rotary Club, to kick off what will be a year long celebration of our club.

Harry McCoy, a member of the Rotary Club of Norfolk since 1955, made these remarks at the event:

"In renewal of our welcome to our most recent members who are here tonight, we are most grateful that they have joined in the propagation of Rotary’s believes in:

truth … in fairness … in  goodwill and friendship, and in beneficial relations to all others… and, specifically to our community.

Those underlying Rotary concepts guided our founders back in 1914 … a hundred years ago.

So tonight… as we start the celebration of our Club’s 100th year, I offer this toast:

Although tonight is an event of frivolity and fun,

I offer a toast to those founders whence the Norfolk Rotary Club was begun,

Coming along a hundred years may seem a very long way,

Yet Norfolk Rotary has provided civic leadership each and every day,

So let us salute our founders… their successors…and also today’s corps,

Saying… “Here’s to our Norfolk Rotary Club… May it live forevermore"
