Rotarians welcomed Sarah DiCalogero, Chair of the Norfolk School Board, who shared insights into the challenges and opportunities shaping Norfolk Public Schools.
A proud Norfolk resident since 1998, DiCalogero has been an educator since 2002, teaching high school math and later serving as an associate professor of mathematics at Tidewater Community College. “TCC’s mantra, ‘Go Anywhere,’ reflects the power of public education,” she said as she reflected on the impact public school had on her own children.
DiCalogero outlined two key focus areas for the School Board this fall: the superintendent search and decision-making regarding school closure and consolidation. The Board received 27 applications for superintendent, narrowed the field to five finalists, and expects to announce a new leader by December 9.
School consolidation has been driven by aging facilities, deferred maintenance, and a near 25% drop in enrollment over the last decade. After extensive public input and review of multiple proposals, the Board approved a modified consolidation plan in October. Willoughby and Norview Elementary are slated to close next year, with rezoning plans to follow in 2026.
“Nobody likes closing schools,” DiCalogero said, sharing that decisions are intended to ensure sustainability and equitable access to quality learning environments.
She also addressed misconceptions about school quality and emphasized the importance of celebrating Norfolk’s educational successes. “We have incredible programs and educators,” she said. “We just need to tell our story better.”
